We’re delighted to announce that Allison and Aaron Smith of Santa Maria, Calif., are the winners of HouseLogic’s Boost Your Roost Contest. The Smiths will receive $20,000 for the home renovation they envisioned — a wheelchair-accessible backyard that the whole family can enjoy.
“We use our outside space as much — sometimes more — than our interior space,” Allison says. “But we have a hurdle. My husband, Aaron, is a quadriplegic, so creating a space that’s wheelchair accessible is priority one. Aaron turns 40 this year; what a milestone birthday gift this would be.”
Here’s how the contest worked:
- Thousands of home owners submitted their $20k home renovation ideas to our six blogger partners: Centsational Girl, Curbly, Design Confidential, Making It Lovely, Pretty Handy Girl, and Someday I’ll Learn.
- Each of the bloggers nominated one home owner to compete as a finalist.
- HouseLogic’s audience voted online during a two-week period to select which of the six finalists would win.
The Smiths were recognized as the contest’s winners according to the official contest rules, which stipulated that only one vote per day could be counted from any individual IP address. In the process of validating the votes, it was discovered that one IP address had cast more than a thousand votes in a single day for another project.
The running online vote tally presented votes before they had been officially validated, which may have led to some confusion regarding the winner. After all the invalid votes were discarded, the Smiths’ project emerged as the clear winner.
Thank you and congratulations to everyone who participated in Boost Your Roost — those of you who entered, who voted, and our blogger partners. Now, our winners, the Smiths, will have the opportunity to realize their outdoor project design. Landscaping work will begin at their home in a few weeks. We’ll videotape the process, so check back this fall to watch video of the project’s progress.
