  • This eco-friendly Christmas idea was made using an old cardboard box. A few necklaces were added to turn it into a tiny yuletide treasure. You can find the tree pattern plus a few extra decorating tips at HeartCoreToys.

  • Who needs a real or fake tree when you have a blackboard? The blogger behind Our Fifth House “Christmasified” her entry foyer using some chalk and a bunch of vintage clip-on earrings. To make the jewels stick, she turned them into magnets.

  • This carpet-to-ceiling tree takes up zero floor space. It was made using colorful tape (try painter’s tape if you’re worried about damaging painted walls) and a string of Christmas lights. FYI, if you use blinking bulbs, you can have your very own holiday light show.

  • We love this cheerful tree created with old wood scraps that were dyed green. A DIY cement base made from stepping stone mix ($6 for an 8-lb. bag at craft stores) keeps the tree from toppling over. If this project jingles your bells, check out the instructions at PrettyHandyGirl.com.

  • What happens when you turn a tomato cage upside down? You have the bones for a great DIY tree. This idea, created by Beyond The Picket Fence, also repurposed an old electric insulator as a jolly tree topper.

  • Here’s a whimsical idea perfect for home improvement junkies. The best part is that, unlike a real tree, a step ladder can be decorated with a lot less stuff. Just don’t skimp on the holiday lights.

  • This rustic idea for a repurposed leaf rake came straight out of the garden shed. The star was cut from discarded cardboard and vintage buttons were used as tree ornaments.

  • Here’s a clever idea that used a drill and a dowel to keep repurposed books in place. Prior to stacking, each cover was painted a merry shade of green. To see how this project was pieced together, go to Mediatinker.com.
