The first hurricane of the season to threaten the U.S., Irene, passed over Puerto Rico Monday and could hit the U.S. anywhere from the Keys to the Carolinas later this week.

Forecasters can’t say for sure how strong the winds will be or exactly where Irene might land, but if you live along the southeast U.S. coast and you don’t have hurricane shutters, now’s the time to prepare your home’s windows for high winds.

  • You can help hurricane-proof your windows by installing screw anchors right now into the exterior walls of your home. During your final prep for Irene and future hurricanes, you’ll use the anchors when you put plywood over the windows.
  • Plug in the battery charger for your cordless drill and your flashlights and then watch a Federal Alliance for Safe Homes video showing you how to properly cover your windows with plywood.
