Take a Bench Break

Tucked away from the main house, this restful patio features a big stone bench made from local limestone. The arms of the bench have flat areas for setting your favorite libation. Choosing stone from local quarries and suppliers eliminates transportation costs that may be added to the price of imported stone, saving you up to 15% on materials.

  • Think a patio is simply a flat space? This one has a water feature that adds kinetic energy and soothing sounds, and rocks of various sizes that create rugged texture. Adding large rocks to a patio-scape often requires equipment that tears up lawns; these boulders were carried by hand on a makeshift gurney pushed by four people.

  • With a little planning and a few custom cuts, a good stonemason can create an eye-catching mosaic. Mark Shepherd used dark Pennsylvania lilac and gold-colored Three Rivers flagstone to make this expressive patio greeting. A custom mosaic such as this one adds about 25% to the overall cost of a project.

  • Working with stone, water, fire, and plants, artist Joe DiPaulo creates about 20 fantastic patio/spa/waterfall landscapes per year. Each requires weeks of careful planning and client consultation. The cost? If you have to ask …

  • Adding rustic benches and a firepit made of dry-stacked Pennsylvania blue flagstone turned what was once a weedy patch of slate pavers into a charming patio getaway. Order flagstone by the pallet; a 2-ton pallet of 2-inch-thick flagstone covers about 70 square feet and costs $200-$400. This firepit used one-half pallet.

  • No need to follow straight lines and grid patterns when planning your patio — a free-form design can be much more expressive. Natural stone slabs, with their rough textures and uncut edges, work well in this rustic-yet-sophisticated mix of river rock and concrete pavers.

  • About $2,500 worth of quarrystone, bluestone, marble, and “some fine big chunks of granite” went into this re-creation of a 1950s pickup truck. It weighs about 20 tons and took five weeks to complete. Although this vehicle is going nowhere fast, it’d be a tireless source of conversation on any patio. Plus, you could plant flowers in the bed of the truck!
