A mudroom sure is handy where outdoor activities abound. This rustic cabin mudroom includes a handy storage/seating bench; coat racks; hat cubbies; a sink — and a nifty multi-boot warmer that dries off wet footwear with hot air. An electric, wall-mounted boot warmer is $1,200 to $2,500, depending on the number of boots you’d like to dry at the same time. Also works for wet gloves!

  • Only 6 feet wide, this entryway mud alcove has it all — a place for hanging coats, a bench for putting on shoes, and storage cabinets for umbrellas, mufflers, and other gear. Contemporary laminate cabinet finishes help keep costs low.

  • Here’s a mudroom designed to keep the family organized and on track. A small office alcove is good for quick calendar checks and for paying bills before heading out the door. The multi-level shoe racks are lined with removable metal trays for easy cleaning; kids’ shoes go on the bottom shelves, adults up top.

  • Want a cool pet project? A special pooch-friendly alcove situated in the mudroom lets Ms. Bowser hunker down instead of wandering around the house with muddy paws. A washable pet bed cover makes cleanup a snap. Encourage mudroom obedience by keeping your dog’s food dish nearby; that’ll make the mudroom her favorite place to hang out.

  • Needing a landing pad for shoes and coats when coming in from their garage, these home owners devised an easy DIY bench topped with a rack made from steel plumbing pipe. Hand-painted boxes are perfect for tossing keys and loose change. Covering the door with chalkboard paint is ideal for posting reminders. Total cost: About $300.

  • This foyer mudroom has all the essentials — a place for hanging coats and scarves, ceramic tile flooring to ward off drips and splatters, and a full-length mirror for those last-second sartorial adjustments before heading out the door.

  • Closed-door storage for coats and accessories keeps messes hidden; it’s even smarter when the storage cabinets are raised off the floor so you can easily stash shoes and boots underneath. Stone look-alike ceramic tile makes an easy-to-care-for floor that shrugs off tracked-in mud and snow.

  • Old boxes and crates painted fun colors make sweet, inexpensive storage solutions for boots, shoes, and gloves. This mudroom is adjacent to a laundry room for those extra-muddy days when everything must go directly into the washing machine.
