In ancient Egypt, cats were considered to be gods. In some of today’s households, cats still get the high-and-mighty treatment. A San Diego couple installed 140 feet of continuous cat walkways, tunnels, and stairs to accommodate their many feline friends. If you need extra space to accommodate your active household, attic conversions are smart remodeling projects. You’ll gain extra living area using walls, ceilings, and floors that are already in place.

  • When this couple got around to remodeling their kitchen, there was no horsing around. They wanted a stable relationship with their big pet, so they opened up their galley kitchen to include a stall. A green kitchen remodeling  ensures low VOCs near Trigger’s quarters.

  • Fido may not appreciate the svelte lines of his Frank Lloyd Bite-inspired house, but he’ll really like the cooling effect of that green roof. On people-size houses, green roofs  – also called garden roofs — require special engineering to build, but they prevent storm runoff and help lower cooling costs.

  • Muddy paws aren’t welcome inside, but a dog-size shower makes dirt disappear. Ceramic tiles  are tough and moisture-proof, and come in many shapes and sizes for $1 to $20 per square foot. Real stone tile mosaics cost $10 to $20 per square foot. A custom-painted tile with a likeness of your pooch will cost around $95 for a 6-by-6-inch tile.

  • Your goats are special. Show them you care with a two-story tower that caters to their love of heights. But before you plan a two-story addition, check your home owner’s association for HOA rules that govern architectural styles and the kinds of animals you can keep on your property.

  • The ideal green bathroom remodeling might include these living fixtures. A high-efficiency toilet uses only 1.6 gallons of water per flush, but don’t worry abut sending your buddies down the drain — there’s an interior tank for flushing water, and an outer tank for the fish. Green cleaning products are great for getting smudges off your acrylic aquarium sink.

  • If you’re planning a kitchen remodel, don’t forget your furry friends: Dogs love to be part of the hubbub of kitchen life. Their own built-in alcove keeps them close but not underfoot. Ceramic tile stands up to heavy traffic (even a dog’s nails) and is a smart option for kitchen flooring.

  • What sets this kitchen apart? Why, stylish wood cabinets, of course. That, and a seven-foot-tall bird aviary. If the idea of sustainability is important to you, ask your cabinetmaker to build your cabinets using only FSC- or SFI-certified wood  harvested from sustainably managed forests.
