A Park City, Utah, condominium association that refused to allow a disabled veteran to keep a small therapy dog in his condominium has agreed to pay $20,000 to resolve a Fair Housing Act violation charge.
The U.S. Justice Department filed suit against the Fox Point at Redstone Association because it refused to waive pet fees and insurance requirements and issued multiple fines against Thomas Burton, a disabled combat veteran of the first Gulf War who uses a therapy dog to cope with depression and an anxiety disorder.
“In this case, a combat veteran was denied an assistance animal for his disability,” said Thomas Perez, assistant attorney general for the DOJ’s civil rights division. “We are pleased that this settlement will compensate Mr. Burton and protect the housing rights of others who need this accommodation.”
