Natural gas prices should be similar to those of last winter thanks to ample domestic natural gas supplies, meaning your home heating bills should be about like last year, according to the American Gas Association.

That forecast could change if we have an extremely cold winter, which would raise demand (and prices) for natural gas.

To keep your heating bills down, try these seven tips from AGA:

  • Install a programmable thermostat to help ensure that you do not forget to adjust the temperature in your home throughout the day.
  • Seal gaps in your attic to keep cold air out.
  • Have furnaces, flues, and chimneys inspected for efficiency and safety.
  • Install one-way heat exchangers on your kitchen fan, clothes dryer, and bathroom fan vents to keep warm air in and cold air out.
  • Keep the areas around all natural gas appliances clean and unblocked to allow for proper air flow.
  • Insulate your attic floor. Sixteen to 24 inches of installation is not excessive in temperate climates.
  • Look for the blue flame. If pilot lights and burners have a steady, blue flame, they are operating correctly. (Decorative gas fire logs are the only exception. Their flame is usually yellow.)
