June is the right time to give the heaviest moving object in your home, your garage door, a quick tune-up.
These three tips from LiftMaster will have your garage door opening and closing like a champ this summer:
- Clean and lubricate the moving parts, including steel rollers.
- Check balance. Start with the door closed and pull the opener release mechanism so you can maneuver the door by hand. If the door is balanced (properly spring-loaded and running freely on its tracks), you should be able to lift the door smoothly without much effort and it should stay open about three or four feet above the floor.
- Make sure the safety reverse eye is working and installed no higher than six inches above the floor. Put a two-inch thick piece of wood or a roll of paper towels in the path of the door and then close it to see if the eye “sees” the object and reverses the door’s path. If the door doesn’t react, adjust or repair the eye. If your garage door doesn’t have a safety reverse feature, it might be time to upgrade to a modern door.
