Congratulations to Habitat For Humanity, which is celebrating today’s United Nation’s World Habitat Day by dedicating its 500,000^th house, this one in Kenya, and beginning construction on its 500,001^st house, that one in flood-ravaged Paterson, N.J.

For the next six weeks, Habitat for Humanity will spotlight the world need for safe, decent, and affordable shelter. The group also will launch its 28^th annual Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project, where volunteers will build 100 earthquake-resistant homes in Léogâne, Haiti, the epicenter of the devastating 2010 earthquake.

I worked on a Habitat house for an alternative Spring Break trip during college. It was a very rewarding and memorable experience. Half a million houses is an impressive milestone. Kudos to Habitat for Humanity for all of their wonderful work!
